If you are interested in starting your own craft business, I would first recommend that you search your competition. Find out if there is a market, want or need for your product(s). Once you have determined what you would like to sell, visit your local tax office to register your business name. They will help you get the proper documentation you need as well as answer any questions you may have. You may also want to visit with your local tax service if you are wanting to do your own accounting. Once your business is “legal” you can decide which direction you would like to go in.
Depending on the type of products you sell, you could offer wholesale, place your items in resale shops, sell at craft fairs, auctions, schools, day cares or create a website.
Check with local craft and resale shops to see if you can place your items in an area of their shop. There may be a monthly fee or a percentage of your sells will go to the shop. Sometimes both. There are also online craft malls for you to place your items with.
Search your area and surrounding counties for craft fairs and bazaars. They even have listings on the internet with the dates, times and products that are accepted.
Websites are fairly easy to design yourself. There are site builders and pre-made templates available to use that will make it simple to get your site up and running.
Hand out flyers, brochures, business cards and samples to everyone you come across. Ask family and friends to also hand out these for you. This will spread the word on your new business venture.
